What is the main disadvantage of a heat pump?

The main disadvantage of a heat pump is its reduced efficiency in extremely cold climates. Air-source heat pumps, in particular, struggle to extract heat from very cold outdoor air (typically below -10°C or 14°F), requiring backup heating systems, which can increase costs and energy use. This limitation is less pronounced in ground-source heat pumps but still a factor in harsh winters.
